There are few places in the world on more cyclists’ bucket lists than the San Juan Islands. The bike-friendly roads, tranquil fishing villages and stretches of shore-lined forests and prairie lands make cycling the San Juan Islands a stress-free and frequently reflective experience. So much so that in 2012, the Lonely Planet named the San Juan Islands as one of the world’s best cycling routes, and the best in the US.

The string of islands—which sit off the coast of Washington like a sprinkle of emerald gems—are beloved for their natural beauty and rustic, old-fashioned charm. The islands are somewhat remote—only reachable by ferry—and lack many modern conveniences—Starbucks and shopping malls are nowhere to be seen. This, though, is part of the appeal. Exploring the San Juans is like stepping back in time, to an era when neighbors left their homes unlocked and strangers waved hello. The only traffic jams you’ll likely encounter on the islands’ languid roads involve other cyclists or maybe a farm animal or two.
