Central Utah has one of the largest stretches of true backcountry left in the nation. This area remained uncharted until the mid-1800s and still may harbor natural treasures yet to be discovered. From the alpine heights of Dixie National Forest to the slickrock canyons of Escalante National Monument, central Utah is a quiet paradise reserved for the few willing to venture this far.
Our cycling tour goes eastward through contrasting desert scenery and high alpine forests along Utah Highway 12 (one of America’s most scenic highways) to Capitol Reef National Park. Named for the white sandstone dome that bears a resemblance to our nation’s capitol building, this national park protects an immense uplift know as the Waterpocket Fold. Long winding roads cut through a maze of canyons and an assembly of arches and monoliths make it seem as if this natural uplift was custom-made just for cyclists! Between rides, we relax in the quaint hamlets of Boulder and Escalante. Remote and sparsely populated, this Escalante and Capitol Reef road bike tour is for anyone looking for un-crowded roads and a backcountry experience.
Day 1-2: Meet in St. George. Shuttle to Ruby’s Inn at Bryce Canyon for evening ride and dinner. Enjoy the next day riding the historic and scenic Highway 12 Scenic Byway to Escalante.
Day 3-4: Ride from Escalante to Boulder Utah via The Hogback and Escalante’s Calf Creek Falls. Ride a portion of the Burr Trail to Deer Creek and Long Canyon. Climb high into the Boulder Mountains with extended views into the Henry Mountains. Descend to Torrey Utah – gateway to Capitol Reef National Park.
Day 5-6: Ride a fun and relaxing descent into Capitol Reef National Park and enjoy a cascading waterfall on the Fremont River. Pick seasonal apricots in the Parks orchard. The final day takes up to beautiful Fish Lake. Situated 8,800 feet up in the heavily forested Fishlake Mountains, the lake makes for a great lunch site and benediction to our adventure. Shuttle back to St. George.

“The location was convenient. There was plenty of room for breakfast and the breakfast was tasty. Our room was comfortable and we had quiet surroundings, which we appreciated after a busy day of hiking!”

Escalante Outfitters is located in the heart of the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument, at the base of Boulder Mountain. Log cabins sleep two people in either a queen or bunk bed and provide a comfortable place to rest your head after a day of exploring the rugged canyon country. Each cabin has fresh clean sheets and blankets, towels, soap, power, heat/air-conditioning, and a reading lamp. There is a bath house centrally located for all lodging guests to use. Linens and towels are replaced in the cabins daily.
“Cabins were big enough while being cozy. Everything you needed was provided, so it’s nothing like camping — towels, soap, sheets, pillows, electricity. Staff were positive, helpful, and chatty. Proximity to restaurant and store with late hours was nice. Grounds are well manicured: path lighting, picnic tables, etc.”

In the middle of Utah’s red rock canyon country sits Boulder Mountain Lodge, an unexpected oasis of tranquility and comfort. This nationally recognized luxury lodge provides everything for a fabulous getaway: spacious rooms, intimate ambiance, unparalleled views, fine dining, and an impressive array of opportunities, services, and amenities. Beautiful rooms have decks or patios with fabulous views, and a wide variety of amenities including robes, satellite television, DVD players, coffee and tea service, refrigerators, and an assortment of Aveda personal products to make you feel truly pampered.
“This is an incredible find–it’s serene, scenic and exactly what you need as an antidote to urban living. We were only able to get one night but would have loved to have stayed longer. We learned that the Lodge fills up very quickly, so we’ll be booking our room well in advance next time. Hell’s Backbone Grill — well what can I say? The mojitos were fabulous and I was able to order a vegan meal that was absolutely delicious. We’ll definitely be back for the hot tub!”

Austin’s Chuckwagon Motel in Torrey Utah offers a swimming pool with hot tub, General Store and deli – all just minutes from the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park. Torrey is a wonderful green oasis in the beautiful Southern Utah desert. The Chuckwagon Motel has clean and spacious rooms, each offering a glimpse of Boulder Mountain. These rooms feature 2 queen beds, individual heat and air conditioning, refrigerators, microwave, direct-dial telephones, flat-screen satellite HDTV with 150 channels + HBO. Complimentary coffee, tea or hot chocolate is offered in the store in the mornings.
“When we initially went to book our accommodation in the area we thought we were going to have to lower our standards and ‘suck it up’ for the night. HOW WRONG WE WERE. Awesome people, great lodging and ultra clean. Right next door to a great grocery store with loads of greasy options. This place was an absolute find.”
