Overview

If you seek something out of the ordinary, this tour offers deep regional history and flavor in what feels like a totally off-the-map destination.

New Mexico: a Cyclist’s Land of Enchantment. From the origin of ancient civilizations to the birthplace of atomic energy, New Mexico’s unique influence spans millennia.

You too, will be fascinated by New Mexico’s compelling blend of history and scenic beauty as you cruise through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on our high desert and alpine road bike tour. Our days are spent cycling the flanks of Wheeler Peak, the state’s highest point found in the southernmost stretches of the Rocky Mountains. As we head north from Santa Fe, the terrain is relatively flat and descends to cross the Rio Grande. The terrain is rolling along the way from Ghost Ranch to Tres Piedras. The Enchanted Circle is at minimum 6000 feet in elevation with several high climbs to over 9000 feet*. Downtime is spiced by visits and warm interactions within the small communities between rides, melting pots of Old European and Far West tribes. Superb New Mexican cuisine highlights every stop.

*Originally this tour was tailored to the seasoned cyclist due to the elevation and climbs. But consider trying it out on an eBike! It makes the climbs easier and faster, giving you more time to drink in the experience.

Day 1-2: Meet-up in Santa Fe. Shuttle to our put-in: the 1.5-million acre Carson National Forest. Ride to the village of Vadito then along the High Road Scenic Byway, maintaining a leisurely touring pace at 7,400 feet above sea level. Revel on the winding road through the Sangre de Cristo range, through badlands and wind-etched hoodoos. Arriving in Taos, visit frontiersman Kit Carson’s home, as well as the unique shops and smart galleries that line the historic town center. The following morning, departing Taos, find your big-ring rhythm on the world renown Enchanted Circle past the likes of Angel Fire Ski Mountain, Eagles Nest Lake, and over Bobcat Pass to Red River-our home for the night.

Day 3-4: Descend out of the Enchanted Circle accross the high desert. Cross the Rio Grande before turning into the Rio Grand Gorge to Ojo Caliente where soothing mineral hot springs await. On the edge of the Ojo Caliente and Chama River Valleys, ride to Ghost Ranch. A 21,000-acre retreat/fine arts campus amidst soaring red cliffs, and property became Georgia O’Keefe’s home and studio. Lunch beneath welcoming cottonwoods, then a walk through the very scenery and landscapes central to O’Keefe’s iconic canvases.

Day 5-6: An easy descent takes us to the Tsankawi Ruins: an isolated-detached section of 33,677-acre Bandelier National Monument. Ride, hike, and explore the area then visit the historic church of Chimayó. Believed built atop sacred earth, spilling miraculous healing powers, the legendary shrine El Santuario de Chimayo is probably the most visited church in New Mexico. Spend the night in Santa Fe before our finale; a ride along Artist Drive to the top of Aspen Basin and back.

Then making your way to a sweet and inviting campfire, sharing your favorite anecdote or image from the day’s activities while marshmallows roast. Inside your tent: a sturdy raised cot, fluffy sleeping bag, and a plush full size pillow. Wow. You earned this. Sweet dreams.

We choose well-maintained public campgrounds with scenic vistas and comfortable arrangements. You’ll move seamlessly from one day of your trip to the next, camping outdoors and enjoying wildly healthy, delicious homemade meals.

The majority of our selected campgrounds feature indoor facilities and showers. Conversely, in more remote backcountry camping scenarios, we’ll provide portable toilets and private solar showers.

Camping gear may be rented or you may bring your own. All of our camping gear is tested and hand-chosen from top manufacturers to ensure you get a good nights’ sleep. All-Inclusive Prices

All internal land expenses and services are covered in the cost of your tour. This means from the time we pick you up at our meeting point, until we drop you back off to head home, all transportation, food preparation, meals (except where noted on itineraries), snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, group supplies and community gear (portable chairs, large awnings, coolers, utensils, etc.) are included. Backcountry permits, licenses, park fees, reservations, and accommodations (lodging) are also included, along with at least two professionally trained trip leaders, a mobile first aid and mechanic station, spare bikes, and a support vehicle(s). Having custom-made vehicles allows us to take you to places few other outfitters can, or will go. Every Escape Adventures tour is accompanied by at least one support vehicle, trailer, and in some cases a second and third transfer van. As you thumb through our catalog, you will also notice our vehicles are big, tough, and different. These are not stock vehicles. After purchase, we custom engineer our trucks, vans, and trailers by our on-staff mechanic to meet the unique needs of different tours. Each of our guides is required to be trained in safe vehicle operation, 4X4 driving, and basic maintenance. Our experienced guides make it look easy, transporting you and up to 12 guests, along with their bikes, fresh food, camping gear and plenty of drinking water to a remote location.

Food represents a big part of the Escape Adventures experience. Our guides prepare all of your meals on our camping trips. Expect three delicious meals a day consisting entirely of freshly prepared foods. These include fresh organic fruits and vegetables, as well as meats. We also have energy snacks aboard our support vehicles. Don’t be surprised if your guides purchase fresh fruits and healthy snacks throughout the day while you’re enjoying a ride. They may just show up on the trail with a local treat! An increasing number of our guests are vegans or vegetarians, whom we not only accommodate but also pleasantly surprise. Should you possess special diet requirements and/or limitations, just let us know at sign-up. We’ll work with you to meet those critical needs.
