Even if you’ve never visited Moab before, you’ve very likely seen it. The small town of Moab and its dramatic surroundings served as the backdrop for countless Golden Era Westerns, including “Wagonmaster”. More recent films—from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade to Thelma and Louise, City Slickers II and Mission Impossible II—were shot here, in and around the La Sal Mountains to the East, part of the 200-million year old Colorado Plateau. The latter also inspired the larger than life animated vistas and exaggerated settings for The Coyote and Roadrunner Show, as well as the Radiator Springs/Route 66 ghost town depicted, with great detail in the Lightning McQueen/Cars Disney films.
Moab’s history is rich and quite varied: From a Mormon outpost on the Spanish Trail, to Wild-West era outlaw haunt or lair, to base for hard-rock miners and rare mineral prospectors. But its latest reincarnation as an outdoor sports mecca is a fairly new one. While the beauty that verges on hyperrealism of Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Parks has drawn nature-lovers for generations, it’s the land edging and surrounding the parks that’s utterly redefined Moab, transforming it into a world-class adventure travel destination.
Present day Moab, has it all: from white-water rafting to horseback riding, phenomenal climbing routes to the afore-described five diamond biking. Forasmuch, it was this incomparable grouping of big outdoor recreational opportunities and pursuits that compelled the first wave of adventurer-seekers to settle here, and thus transform this delightful little city.
Our signature Moab road rides offer challenging, fun rides for all levels of riders, marked by seemingly endless views that shade each day. Off the bike, our tours have built-in side hikes. The latter lend intimate optics onto some of the area’s most astonishing natural features, as we view-find from characteristic natural arches to age-old petroglyphs.
Day 1-2: Meet in Moab. Kick it off on Kane Creek Road: our afternoon warm-up ride. Refueled by a great night’s sleep, ride alongside the Colorado River, via Potash Road. Besides passing beneath towering 500-ft. cliffs we’ll view incredible Native American petroglyphs. After lunch, we transition to Arches National Park. Swapping cycling shoes for hiking boots, we trek the geological wonderland known as Devil’s Garden Natural Area to Double Arch, Landscape Arch and more.
Day 3-4: The La Sal Mountain Loop starts our day. This classic Moab ride brings spectacular view finding along the Colorado River. Our route transits from high desert landscape into Ponderosa pine/Aspen forest then back to high desert. Day Four, our mini-peloton sweeps into Dead Horse State Park. A high tempo out-and-back—and one of our personal favorites—Dead Horse Point affords spectacular views into Canyonlands National Park. You’re also riding into the opening scene of MI2. Maximizing headspace/peace of mind, our routing sticks to dedicated bike paths and back roads all throughout.
Day 5: Our final day takes it down a notch, tempo-wise. Visually: it’s off the charts. From a 45-minute shuttle ride out to Dewey Bridge Historic Site, we sweep past the otherworldly citadels and fortresses of sandstone at Fisher Towers and Castle Valley, respectively; both, as well, inlets for the Colorado.

Located in the Heart of Canyonlands and just 4 miles from Arches National Park, is the Big Horn Lodge, one of Moab’s finest lodging accommodations. The Big Horn Lodge features an outdoor heated pool and a great locals favorite, Smitty’s Gold Steak Restaurant, located on site.
“The room was a nice rustic feel and very clean. The beds were comfortable and had nice amenities. Great rate. Easy drive to the Arches and Canyonlands. Close to restaurants and stores. McDonalds next door for quick meal before hiking.”
