When you think of national parks, summer often comes to mind. But here’s the secret: the best time to take your family is actually in September and October. This “secret season” is when the summer crowds vanish, the weather is crisp and comfortable, and wildlife is at its most active. It’s also easier to snag lodging and campsites without the long waits of peak summer.
If your kids’ schools have a teacher in-service day, or even just a long weekend, consider using that time for a quick national park getaway. Many schools also allow families to arrange a couple of days off for special trips. Trust me—your kids will learn as much from the wide-open outdoors as they do from any textbook.
Here are some family-friendly fall adventures to inspire your next trip:
Yellowstone – Saddle and Paddle
On Flying Pig Adventures’ three-night tour, families can saddle up for horseback riding, tackle Class III rapids on a rafting trip, and even try fly-fishing. Cool weather makes exploring Yellowstone’s landscapes extra pleasant, and kids will love the variety of activities packed into this one adventure.
Glacier National Park – Bike the Going-to-the-Sun Roa
Escape Adventures’ six-day cycling tour rolls through alpine meadows and mountainsides glowing with fall color. Families with teens who enjoy biking will find this both active and educational, as each stop reveals more about Glacier’s “Crown of the Continent” ecosystem.
Kenai Fjords, Alaska – Alaska Fjord Explorer
On Adventure Life’s seven-day tour, families paddle past glaciers, keep watch for whales and puffins, and explore the charming coastal town of Seward. Kids will especially love the train ride to Anchorage and the chance to meet sled dogs.
Wyoming – Cowboy Retreat at Paintrock Canyon Ranch
At this 80,000-acre ranch, families can try horseback riding, fly-fishing, and hiking, then rest in safari-style tents complete with beds and homey touches. Meals are made with local ingredients by a private chef, and Yellowstone is just a drive away—perfect for mixing cowboy life with a national park visit. Learn all about my family’s dude ranch vacations and why we love them!
Bryce & Zion – Mountain Biking Tour
Escape Adventures offers a six-day biking trip that weaves through alpine meadows, aspen forests, and the world-famous red-rock trails of Bryce and Zion. The cooler weather makes it ideal for active families, and the surreal landscapes are unlike anywhere else. If you are traveling that far, you NEED to see both Bryce and Zion! We went in the summer when it was very hot, we would have enjoyed it so much more in the cooler months.
Our whirlwind family visit to Bryce Canyon—though only 1.5 days—“left us in awe” with its 38-mile scenic drive, hoodoos bathed in golden tones, and unforgettable views from Rainbow Point that make this iconic spot a must-see for any family adventure.
Our family trek along Zion’s Kayenta Trail to the Upper Emerald Pool was a perfect blend of easy hiking and awe-inspiring scenery—making it a wonderfully accessible and rewarding adventure for kids and parents alike.
Grand Teton – Glamping at Fireside Resort
Families can stay in luxuriously outfitted tiny houses just minutes from Grand Teton National Park. It’s an easy base for hiking, rafting, and even Yellowstone day trips, with all the comforts of home waiting when you return.
On my Ford Explorer Platinum Adventure Tour, I had the exhilarating experience of driving through both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, spotting bison herds up close and soaking in the breathtaking Western landscapes from sunup to sundown.
Arizona – White Stallion Ranch Getaway
Near Saguaro National Park, White Stallion Ranch gives families a taste of Western life. Days are filled with horseback riding, fat-tire biking, shooting, archery, and even a family rodeo, all framed by towering desert cacti.
Colorado – National Parks Road Trip via AdventureGenie
With five national parks—each offering something different—Colorado makes the perfect family road trip. AdventureGenie’s AI planning tool helps map out a customized route to explore sand dunes, canyons, rivers, and more with ease.
Grand Canyon North Rim – MTB & Camping Expedition
Escape Adventures’ five-day mountain biking and camping trip gives families a quieter, less-crowded Grand Canyon experience. The North Rim offers rolling terrain, crisp air, and jaw-dropping views at every turn.
Big Sky, Montana – Luxury Fall Escape
At The Wilson Hotel, families enjoy cozy modern accommodations surrounded by golden aspens and rivers rich with wildlife. It’s a perfect mix of comfort and adventure, with Yellowstone just a short drive away. During my Yellowstone trip, I enjoyed amazing, stunning beauty the entire drive that makes me want to return with my family. It was neat to see the Montana River knowing it is the same river in the movie, “A River Runs Through It”.
Canyonlands, Utah – E-Bike White Rim Trail
For adventurous families with older kids, this four-day e-biking and camping trip follows a 100-mile loop through arches, mesas, and spires carved by the Green and Colorado Rivers. It’s a natural rollercoaster of scenery and discovery.

Utah – Hut-to-Hut E-Bike Adventure
The Aquarius Trail Hut System is a unique way to explore Utah’s colorful landscapes. Families can bike from Brian Head Peak through Bryce and Escalante, with overnight huts providing kitchens, beds, and bike tools. It’s rugged exploration made comfortable.
Staycation in Cuyahoga Valley National Park
If a big cross-country trip isn’t in the cards this fall, plan a local two-day staycation in our own backyard. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, nestled between Akron and Cleveland, transforms in autumn with brilliant fall colors, cool air, and plenty of family-friendly activities.
Spend a Saturday biking or walking along the Towpath Trail, exploring waterfalls like Brandywine Falls, or riding the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Head home that night for a cozy sleep in your own beds, then return Sunday to hike the Ledges Trail, visit Beaver Marsh for wildlife spotting, or enjoy a family picnic among the fall leaves.
It’s a budget-friendly way to experience the magic of the season while still getting the sense of adventure and togetherness that comes with a national park trip.
Why Families Should Travel in the “Secret Season”
- Educational value: History, geology, and ecology come alive in the parks.
- Wildlife encounters: Cooler weather means animals are more active and easier to spot.
- Less stress: Smaller crowds mean shorter lines, quieter trails, and more space to soak it all in.
- Family bonding: Whether it’s a campfire, a horseback ride, or a hike, these trips create lifelong memories.
So grab your kids’ school calendar, circle an upcoming day off, and start planning a family adventure this fall. With fewer crowds and better weather, America’s national parks are waiting to welcome you in their most magical season.

Since 1992, we at Escape Adventures have been blessed to shape and lead adventure travel vacations through some of the most awe-inspiring natural destinations in the world. Each successive season, our passion for adventure grows through memorable moments with our guests. Fresh air, faith, fitness and friends are the building blocks for our ventures, the treasured experiences that keep us moving forward. For those of you who have trekked and traveled with us over the past quarter century, Heather and I express our sincerest gratitude. The memories are priceless.
